B.C. oil spill shows conflict between old and new

Posted on: July 31, 2007

As Canadian cities grow further and further into their outskirts, once far-flung industrial sites are now snuggled up with new residential neighbours and as last week's pipeline rupture near Vancouver shows, co-existence is sometimes uneasy. Urbanization has meant some industries shut down and move, the land reclaimed for more homes.

Posted on: July 31, 2007

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - Five Alberta construction unions have voted in favor of their first strike in a quarter of a century as they seek higher wages and improved working conditions at a slate of multibillion-dollar oil sands projects. Electricians, boilermakers, plumbers and pipefitters, millwrights, and refrigeration mechanics have approved a strike and 72-hour notice could be served as soon as Wednesday, though a quick walk-off is not yet certain, an analyst said.

Construction may start as early as 2009.

From the Ground to the Pump - Alberta Oil

Posted on: July 11, 2007

HARDISTY - On a breezy summer day in eastern Alberta, Jim Kovacich, with Windale Oilfield Services, oversees a crew on its sixth day of reworking an old pump jack that's seen better days. The sour smell of oil permeates the muddy site, and signs warning of hydrogen sulphide are plastered on several fences. Keep downwind, Kovacich says, half joking. Pump jacks riddle the countryside in this hilly region of Alberta where the sandy terrain is more useful for grazing cattle than growing crops.

Risky business

Posted on: July 11, 2007

Economists, scientists and politicians around the world and at home have told us that climate change can be tackled if we figure out a way to capture massive volumes of carbon dioxide and store it underground. Former U.S. vice-president and environmental crusader Al Gore says it's part of the solution. So does Tim Flannery, author of the global warming book The Weather Makers, and British economist Sir Nicholas Stern.

Oil sands no quick fix as Big Oil leaves Venezuela

Posted on: July 11, 2007

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - For Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and ConocoPhillips (COP.N: Quote, Profile, Research) it may appear simple: shift efforts, people and resources to Canada's oil sands now that the oil majors have retreated from Venezuela. US demand for Canadian oil seen doubling in 8 yrs

Posted on: June 27, 2007

CALGARY, Alberta, June 25 (Reuters) - U.S. demand for Canadian oil is expected to double in the next eight years, and domestic use could jump 44 percent as Alberta's oil sands output surges, the Canadian oil industry's main lobby group said on Monday. However, that production growth could be tempered by the same problems that have plagued the oil sands industry throughout this decade -- labor shortages and inflation in the cost of materials like steel, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers said.
